Comic Viewer Building Archives
While we've designed Comic Viewer to be as flexible as possible in handling comic archives, here are some recommendations for building archives that will deliver the best experience. Read more about Comic Book Archive files at Wikipedia.
- Create a separate archive for each comic book. An archive is a folder of images compressed with RAR or ZIP.
- Use a separate portrait image for each page (as opposed to two-page spreads or individual panels). Comic Viewer will automatically display 2-page spreads from your portrait pages when in landscape view.
- Scan at 150dpi. This will result in a modern comic page with pixel dimensions of 994 x 1538 (width x height). The benefit is faster import, and 150% zoom when viewing on iPad.
- Save your images in JPEG format for the best balance of quality and small file size. (Comic Viewer can handle .jpg. .png, .gif, .bmp, and .tif)
- Use logical file names that avoid special characters. A typical file has a name followed by a single dot ".", plus a three character extension. (e.g. "MisterToastComic.cbz"). The extension is what applications use to determine the file type. Check out Wikipedia.org entry on file name extension for more info.
- Use correct file extensions. Archives created with ZIP should have the extension ".zip" or ".cbz". Archives created with RAR should have the extension ".rar" or ".cbr".
- Include "cover" in the name of your cover image (example: "Cover.jpg")
- Name your images sequentially in ascending order with numbers that correspond to the correct page number (e.g. "Page1.jpg", "Page2. jpg")
